Visitors to New York City will have a smaller selection of apartment rentals to choose from as of May 1 of next year. That’s because the city recently passed a law banning short-term rentals less than 30 days in buildings that have five or more units. Politicians claim the restriction is about enhancing safety and cracking down on illegal hotels, but critics say it’s deterring tourists.
New York isn’t the only city banning rentals. Chicago is also restricting rentals less than 30 days to properties in business for at least a year that also have a special permit. Other jurisdictions such as Sonoma County, Calif., and New Braunfels, Texas, are also tossing around the idea, according to USA Today.
